Wash. state sets voter registration record

By Associated Press

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A record number of voters are registered in the state leading up to the November election.

State election officials say the new record is 3,515,393. That's about 1,300 more voters than the record set in 2004, which was scaled back after the state removed more than 400,000 invalid registrations from its database.

Secretary of State Sam Reed says there are more than 280,000 new voters this year, and thousands of new registration applications are still being processed.

That doesn't include a last-minute surge leading up to the Oct. 4 preliminary registration deadline.

Voters can still register in person up until Oct. 20. Election Day is Nov. 4.
