PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) _ The Newport Police Department identified a man swept off a jetty at the Oregon coast as 23-year-old Arnold Halstad of Tigard.

Lt. Dave Teem said Tuesday that Halstad and another man walked out onto the south jetty Sunday morning.

A short time later, a Coast Guard lifeboat was escorting a boat into Newport harbor when the crew spotted a man waving for them.

The man reported he and Halstad had just been knocked off the south jetty into the water by a wave. Searchers discovered a white hooded sweat shirt matching the description of one worn by Halstad man but no other sign of him.
