CLACKAMAS, Ore. - A couple trusted their granddaughter to take care of them and instead, she took them for nearly half a million dollars.

A veteran investigator with Clackamas County said this is the worst single case of financial elder abuse he has ever seen.

And it is no small irony that the cousin who turned Connie Cole in is Elaine Judd, who works at an assisted living center in Stevenson and who is an advocate for the elderly.

"I wish I would have jumped sooner," she said.  "I wish I would have done more sooner."

Two years ago, Judd realized her cousin was taking large amounts of money from their grandparents, Anne and James Morgan, who are now 91 and 95 years old, respectively.

Within less than two years, Connie Cole convinced the Morgans to let her control their finances and she stole nearly half a million dollars.

Cole bought, among other things, a truck and a home near Spirit Mountain Casino, where she liked to gamble.

Cole has been sentenced to 75 months in prison and Judd hopes that sharing her family's story will inspire others to take action if they suspect elder abuse.

The Morgans are now living at a care facility in West Linn.  Their life savings are gone but they do get assistance from the state.

James Morgan has been talking about going back to work at the age of 95 because he doesn't like taking handouts and wants to pull his own weight.
