SEATTLE - A giant pumpkin grown in Bothell squashed the scales at 1,467 pounds Saturday at a regional weigh-in - and broke the state record for heaviest pumpkin.

The previous Washington state record for largest pumpkin was 1,420 pounds, set in 2005.

This year's record-sized pumpkin, grown by Brad Perham of Bothell, was one of dozens entered in the contest sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Giant Pumpkin Growers Club.

Experts at the event said record-breaking pumpkins can go for as much as $10,000, and their seeds can sell for up to $150 each.

Taking second place in Saturday's contest was Stan Pugh of Puyallup, whose pumpkin weighed in at 1,247 pounds. Third place went to Mike Popp of Poulsbo, who brought in a 1,225-pound pumpkin.

The world record for largest pumpkin is a 1,689-pound monster grown last year in Rhode Island.
