Molalla man surrenders after five-hour standoff

MOLALLA, Ore. - A five-hour standoff came to a peaceful end Sunday evening after officers used gas to flush out an armed man from his Molalla home.

The incident began after neighbors reported that the man was drunk and had fired a large-caliber rifle into the air on his property at 15771 S. Highway 211 about 1 p.m., according to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. Witnesses told police the man is blind and has a history of similar dangerous behavior.

Clackamas County Sheriff's officials responded and evacuated three nearby homes for safety reasons while trying to talk to the man, who refused to come outside.

Eventually, members of the department's Special Weapons and Tactical Team (SWAT) lobbed "debilitating" gas into the home because darkness was approaching and the resident was not talking with negotiators, the sheriff's office said.

Cole Lee Chancellor, 47, was lodged in the Clackamas County jail on charges of unlawful use of a firearm, recklessly endangering and menacing, the sheriff's office said. He was not hurt.
