Railroad officer shoots armed man after lengthy chase in Portland
By Adam Ghassemi KATU News and KATU.com Web StaffPORTLAND, Ore. - A railroad officer shot a wanted man whom police said approached officers with a weapon and a lit gas can in north Portland Saturday. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He was undergoing surgery Sunday, police said. Police said it happened about 4 p.m. when a police officer with BNSF Railway stopped the suspect along train tracks that run parallel to North Portland Road north of North Columbia Boulevard and determined he had an outstanding warrant for resisting arrest. The suspect, whom police described as a transient, decided to run, leading railroad and Portland police on a chase on foot that lasted more than 30 minutes, police said. "He was hiding, we’d find him, he’d take off again," said Officer Cathe Kent, a Portland police spokeswoman. "We ended up about a mile from where we stopped him originally and located him at a transient camp." Once at that camp, police said, the suspect armed himself with a weapon and the gas can. At some point, police said, he put down the can and charged at officers with his weapon. That's when a Portland officer used a stun gun on him and a railroad officer opened fire, police said. It was not clear where he was shot. Police did not identify the officers involved in the incident. |
