NEAR PORTLAND, Ore. – Firefighters from two rural districts and Portland battled a raging house fire on Sauvie Island early Friday morning.

The home was almost a total loss but the lone female resident escaped without injury. The fire started just after midnight Thursday.

Sauvie Island volunteer firefighters started out battling the blaze, which sent flames and smoke into the air above the enclave located just outside Portland along Highway 30.

Crews from Portland and Scappoose then joined in the effort, but the home was burned nearly down to its frame.

Investigators planned to return to the home Friday afternoon to search for the cause of the fire.
