Man found with woman's body charged

PORTLAND, Ore. - A 54-year-old man found inside a Southeast Portland apartment along with a dead woman on Friday has been charged with murder, police said.

Joseph Frank Rockwood was lodged in the Multnomah County jail on one count of murder. He was being held without bond Saturday.

Police responded to the Stonehenge Apartment complex at 11614 Southeast Division St. Friday to check on the welfare of a woman who had not been seen for several days, police said. They discovered the body of a woman in her 50s while checking Apartment 96. Rockwood was also in the apartment, apparently just sitting down.

Police detained him and obtained a search warrant to enter the apartment. Investigators donned protective suits and masks, and an awful smell permeated the complex once they opened the door.

Police on Monday identified the woman found dead as 52-year-old Theresa Ann Rockwood. An autopsy determined she died of  multiple stab wounds, police said

The relationship between Rockwood and the woman was not clear.
