PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon steel company says it plans to lay off 130 workers.

Kelly Brossart of Evraz Oregon Steel Spiral Pipe Mill says the company is cutting jobs because of an unprecedented drop in demand for steel. The layoffs will be effective immediately, she says.

Brossart says the 130 layoffs account for about 13 percent of the company's Portland work force.

Based in Portland, Evraz has plants in eight locations in the U.S. and Canada. The company's Oregon Steel Spiral Pipe Mill converts steel coils into pipes for natural gas and oil transmission lines, and structural applications.
