PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is cutting expenses by 10 percent in a move that will include 20 layoffs to cover a $1.4 million shortfall.

OMSI President Nancy Steuber said Wednesday the museum has felt the economic downturn like other businesses.

She said that over the past year OMSI had record-breaking attendance, debt reduction, energy efficiency and sustainable operating decisions but that it wasn't enough.

She said there were fewer visitors during the fiscal year beginning June 1.

In 2007, 1.3 million people visited OMSI, which has a $19 million annual budget. The museum will offer severance pay and outplacement support for laid-off workers.

OMSI relies on ticket sales, memberships, retail sales and donations and gets no tax dollars.
