ASTORIA, Ore. - Authorities have confirmed that a man living above his closed flower shop in downtown Astoria died in the Thanksgiving night fire last week.

The state medical examiner's office determined that 60-year-old Roger Martin died of smoke inhalation during the fire, Astoria police said.

Investigators determined the fire started in the former florist shop and was accidental, police said. They found multiple extension cords powering everything from a coffee maker to a hot plate, police said, and they believe the blaze was electrically caused.

The fire burned for some time before it was discovered; it spread from the ceiling to the roof and neighboring businesses.

Martin was involved in the community theater, playing a character named "Captain Jack" for 15 years in the city's signature production "Shanghaied in Astoria."

On the night of the fire, posters were already up for his role in "Scrooged in Astoria."

But his stage smile hid private pain.  Hard times had forced him to close the flower shop recently, and he was living upstairs when the fire started.

The Astoria Florist store was a family business that opened nearly 100 years ago.

The downtown building that burned Thursday was constructed in 1922 and held the flower shop, a Bank of America office, two restaurants and another business.
