Bear spotted near Roseburg, Ore., elementary school still at large

"The adults on staff know about the bear and so while they are out on recess duty, they are not only scanning and watching kids but they are also watching for wildlife," said Nicki Opp, the school's principal. "Students know that if they hear three loud blasts of a whistle that they are to walk over by the duty teacher, get in line and walk inside." Opp said students have been told to walk, not run, if they see a bear. However, wildlife officials have told the school the bear is not likely to visit school grounds while school is in session due to the noise and other commotion. Bears are generally afraid of humans and are easily startled by loud noises. "The chances of this bear coming onto campus while (campus) is alive and kids are here and yelling and screaming is so remote," Opp said. "The agencies that we were in contact with advised us to have the precautionary measures in place but that we really shouldn't be worried about it." Hikers are checking the nature trail daily for signs of the bear. If the bear is caught in the live trap, it can be relocated away from the school to a new habitat. |

Hikers discovered bear droppings on the nature trail near Eastwood Elementary School. A live trap (at right) has been set to capture the bear, and school officials notified parents and prepared students in case the bear is spotted during school hours.
