Gilbert Coronado said he jumped a fence, called the police and was still trapped in the yard when two officers arrived. He said he was out for an evening walk and talking on his cell phone when he saw the dogs. Coronado said the dogs were across the street from him and on the loose when he first saw them. Once the dogs saw him, however, the situation rapidly changed and the dogs ran in his direction. Coronado jumped a short fence outside a home and used a metal yard decoration to help fend off the animals once he realized the dogs were on the attack. He said one of the dogs tried to bite its was through the wooden fence that was between them. He was still trying to fend off the dogs when officers arrived. The officer reported the dogs then charged him. One dog was shot twice as it charged the officer, according to Coronado. Washington County Animal Control officers later arrested the dogs' owner, Thomas Pereau, 25, on an unrelated charge. The survivng dog had reportedly returned to Pereau's apartment. He may face charges relating to the attack. He was arrested on a warrant for unrelated charges and may face additional charges in relation to the incident involving his dogs. The surviving dog is with his girlfriend and may be taken into custody by animal control officers following an investigation. The surviving dog may not be subject to any action since it did not attack Coronado or the officer. |
