SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- An 18-year-old woman held against her will in her apartment by a man hiding from police managed to send text messages to her mother, who alerted police to the suspect's whereabouts.

The suspect, who turned 19 today, now faces charges of kidnapping and burglary and may face additional charges. The victim was unharmed.

The incident began when Springfield police attempted to stop a man on a bicycle in the 700 block of Scotts Glen Drive in Springfield, Ore., after receiving a report of a suspicious person at 7:49 a.m.

The bicyclist fled towards the Lindale Apartments at 363 Lindale Dr. and then towards the Pheasant Park Apartments at 475 Lindale Dr. Officers searched the area without success.

Then 911 received a call around 8:37 a.m. from the mother of an 18-year-old woman who lives in the Lindale Apartments. The daughter sent her mother text messages on her cell phone saying that an unknown man had come into her apartment and was holding her against her will.

The mother and daughter continued to exchange text messages while police responded to the scene and secured the area around the apartment.

The woman convinced the suspect to let her go outside to retrieve her mail. Instead of returning with the mail, the woman stayed outisde -- and officers entered the apartment and took the suspect into custody.

Police arrested Nicholas Robert Nash, who turned 19 today, on charges of kidnapping and burglary. Police said Nash had stolen mail in his possession and matched the description of the man police attempted to stop earlier in the day.

Nash also had an active warrant for his arrest issued Monday after he failed to appear in court Friday. Nash faces a Jan. 22 jury trial for felony identity theft and unlawful use of a computer. Nash has other charges pending before courts in Lane County, including charges of possession of methamphetamine, posession of a stolen vehicle and burglary.

Police did not identify the victim or the apartment number where the incident took place.
