Man's gun accidentally fires, hitting neighbor
By KATU.com Web StaffPORTLAND, Ore. - Police believe a man's handgun accidentally fired in his north Portland apartment early Sunday, sending a bullet into his sleeping neighbor's home and hitting her in the shoulder. Sandra Howell, 46, received treatment for the non-life-threatening injury at Legacy Emanuel Hospital. Police learned of the shooting after responding to the hospital to talk to Howell. They then contacted her neighbor at his apartment in the 8600 block of North Columbia Boulevard, and he agreed to cooperate with investigators. Police determined the man had thrown a .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun on his bed, causing it to discharge. The man possibly thought the gun was unloaded at the time, police said. Alvert O'Neal Jr., 45, was charged with third-degree assault and reckless endangering. He surrendered the handgun involved in the shooting. |
