SUNRIVER, Ore. (AP) - It didn't much matter the time - day or night - the gun shots just kept going.

"Over the past 19 years, we've been plagued by bang, bang, bang, bang," said Marcia Hughes of Sunriver.

Ever since Hughes moved to the Lazy River West subdivision, she's had to listen to her neighbors shooting their guns.

But that may have all ended this week. Hughes was one of the residents who spoke in favor of forming a no-shoot district in the subdivision. The Deschutes County Commission unanimously approved the rule, and it took effect immediately.

"Many of us live out here because of the wildlife," Hughes said. "They're all gone now because of the shooting."

The subdivision became the county's 20th no-shoot district. Under Deschutes County Code, residents in the districts cannot shoot explosive firearms unless they are defending their property or a person, slaughtering farm animals or shooting at a lawfully established firing range. The fine for violating it is $720, according to county staff and Deschutes County Code.

The charge to silence the gun shots was led by Jude Fulghum. She had to gather signatures in support of the new rules from 60 percent of the registered voters in her district - she signed up 64 percent of the 99 registered voters, said Doreen BlomDe, an administrative supervisor in the county Community Development Department.

But 64 percent is hardly unanimous, and the new district has angered some.

Resident Del Rothrock said the new rules would leave him with few other shooting locations. There are rock quarries, gun clubs or a shooting range in Crescent, Rothrock said, but those are inconvenient. In the case of the quarry, perhaps unsafe.

"It's part of our constitutional rights," he said. "It was guaranteed to us to carry and own firearms. I see this as one more attempt to take it away from us."
