PORTLAND, Ore. – A police special response team was activated Friday morning after a report a man in southeast Portland had shot someone and was holed up in a residence.

Police SERT members staged near the 4200 block of Southeast Cora Street. Roads near the residence were closed while police negotiated with the man inside the home.

After a short standoff, police arrested an elderly man and found two people had been shot. One man had been shot in the stomach and is expected to recover, but a woman in the home was shot in the head and is in more serious condition.

The two victims were later identified as adopted children of the elderly man, 92-year-old John Wesley Myers.

The injured woman, 43-year-old Kim Macintosh, is in critical condition and the injured man, 49-year-old Mark Myers, is in serious condition.

Macintosh's 12-year-old son was in the home but was not injured. Police shot a Rottweiler that was preventing rescue personnel from reaching the injured woman, who was reportedly on a couch and could not move.

"Because of the serious nature of her injuries - she appeared gravely injured - the officer made the decision, ultimately, to shoot the dog," said Sgt. Brian Schmautz with the Portland Police Bureau.

Police said they did not know what the motive for the shooting was and did not say what kind of gun was used.  Neighbors told KATU News that Meyers has some sort of dementia and police are looking into that.

John Wesley Myers has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and is being held at the Justice Center Jail.
