WASHINGTON (AP) - Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley has won a place on the Senate banking and budget committees.
Merkley, a Portland Democrat who took office this month, said the two panels complete his committee assignments for the next two years.
He said he was especially pleased to win a seat on the banking committee, which also oversees housing and urban development, as well as federal monetary policy, including the Federal Reserve System.
The banking panel will play a key role in the debate over how to reform and revitalize the nation's financial markets while protecting consumers and homeowners from predatory practices, Merkley said.
Merkley also serves on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, or HELP, and the Environment and Public Works Committee.
