EUGENE, Ore. -- What started as a fight between two students at North Eugene High School escalated into a racially charged situation Thursday afternoon.
Two youths were injured and four adults and a juvenile were charged by police. The two youths suffered lacerations and abrasions, according to police.
Two of the people charged by police in connection with the fight now face charges of racial intimidation, according to the Eugene Police Department.
And North Eugene students who heard racial slurs stood up and verbally confronted those remarks, according to a teacher who witnessed the event.
"She referred to it as beautiful because she saw a diverse group of students being unified in response to racist behavior by non-school adults," said Laurie Moses with the Eugene School District, who spoke to the teacher. "That says a great deal about the climate at the school and the knowledge that our student body has about human dignity."
Here's what is known so far based on interviews with police and school officials:
The initial fight started during lunch when a white student used racial slurs towards a black student, according to police.
School staff responded immediately and ended the fight, Moses with the school district said.
"This was a fairly isolated incident between two students," Moses said. "The minute that altercation occured, it was responded to immediately by campus security and North administration."
Both students contacted their families after the fight. The 15-year-old white boy's family arrived at the school before police.
Police and school officials say the father approached three black students who were not involved in the earlier fight.
Both police and school officials say the father started using racial slurs towards the student.
"That was heard by a number of North Eugene students," Moses said, "who quickly banded together and displayed their feelings about racist remarks being made on the schoolg rounds, which is clearly a violation of school policy."
Police say the mother and father assaulted two of the three youths, while a third adult family member got in a fight. Police say no weapons were used, only fists.
School staff called 911. Police responded and charged the following people on suspicion of the listed crimes:
A 15-year-old white juvenile
Charges: Disorderly Conduct, Criminal Mischief Two, Racial Intimidation
Meta Pauline Reeder, 40, of Eugene
Charges: Assault Three

William Ray Roberts, 36, of Eugene
Charges: Racial Intimidation, Assault Three
Justin William Reeder, 23, of Eugene
Charges: Assault Four
Police charge other boy's mother
A fourth adult was cited in the incident. Police arrived at the same time as one of the mother of the other boy involved in the fight. Police say Michelle Marie Dumilieu, 38, of Eugene, arrived at the scene and was attempting to confront the other parties and repeatedly refused officer instructions and commands.
Police charged her with Resisting Arrest, Interfering and two counts of Physical Harassment.
