OHSU opens ER just for kids

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon Health & Science University has opened a new emergency room just for kids.

The OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital is staffing the unit with specially trained emergency medicine physicians and pediatric emergency nurses.

Dr. David Spiro, the chief of pediatric emergency medicine, says children often need different treatment and equipment than adults.

The new ER features a separate, enclosed waiting area for children and their families, with kid-friendly amusements, including a video game console and a big-screen TV.
