SALEM, Ore. (AP) - An amended Senate bill would revoke for life the license of a teacher shown to have had sexual contact with a student even if the student is over 18.

But the bill was amended to remove jail time. The executive director of the state Teacher Standards and Practices Commission Vicki Chamberlain said there was concern over the expense of creating a new crime.

Currently a license can be revoked for life only if a crime is involved.

The Salem Statesman Journal newspaper said the Senate Judiciary Committee plans to send the bill to the Senate on Wednesday. It is the last of six bills moving through the Legislature that would crack down on educator misconduct.
