PORTLAND, Ore. - Speeders beware.

New speed-control signs are now checking your speed at several dangerous intersections and roads around the Portland area.

The city is installing 11 new automated speed-checking radar signs near risky intersections. The signs do not have cameras attached and are not part of the photo-radar program.

The city chose locations where speed and curves have contributed to crashes, such as on Southwest Multnomah Boulevard just east of Southwest 69th Avenue.

Ester McGinnis said he has wanted something to stop speeders down on that road for decades.

“It's a miracle that several people haven't been killed here,” McGinnis told KATU News. “It's an intersection those of us in the neighborhood have fought to have it redone and lighted for about 40 years.

Portland Mayor Sam Adams says right now there's only money to fund new stoplights at the "deadliest" of Portland’s intersections.

In the meantime, Adams says the 11 new radar reader boards are a creative way to get people to watch their speed.
