SHERWOOD, Ore. - A dog that was hit by a car was brought back to life by a neighbor who quickly sprung into action to save the pooch.

Wednesday morning, Timothy Dehning heard the dog, named Prince, get hit on Southwest Elwert Road and he ran outside to help.  But it appeared he was too late.

"At that point, the dog had died in my hands," he said.

Dehning, who wasn't about to give up, did the only thing he could think of - mouth-to-snout resuscitation.

"I just wiped his nose off a little bit," he said.  "His jaw was in my hand.  I just closed his jaw and actually stuck his whole snout in my mouth."

It worked and Prince came back to life.  And the dog's owner, James Fogle, can't say thank you enough.

"You really have to give him a lot of credit because I don't know if that's something that most people would be able to actually do," he said.

Dehning said he wasn't even sure it would work.  He just took what he'd seen on Animal Planet shows and did his best to keep air moving through Prince's body.  And it paid off.

"I knew it was working because I could see his chest rise up," he said.  "I continued to give him a couple of breaths and I watched."

Police were called and Prince was taken to the Tualatin Emergency Veterinary Clinic for treatment.  Amazingly, he didn't have any broken bones - just cuts, scrapes and bruises.

"He's a little loopy from the medicine that they're giving him but he's doing OK," said Fogle.

This isn't the first time Dehning, who is currently an unemployed contractor, has helped save a life.  He said a few years ago he gave CPR to a woman when he drove up on a car accident.
