Woman with dementia found alive after two days in the woods

COQUILLE, Ore. - A Coquille woman with dementia who spent two nights outside after going for a walk was found on a neighbor's property less than a half mile from her home, hypothermic but alive.
The Coos County Sheriff's Office said Clara Boggs, 71, probably would not have survived another night out in the elements. "Almost the end of the third day, we hadn't found her," said her husband, Chipp Boggs, "and at that point, and most of the previous two days, I was feeling utterly devastated and hopeless, that at best, maybe, we would find her body." Boggs said his wife suffers from dementia and often walks within their three acres of fenced-in property. She apparently found an opening on Friday and walked out. Over the next three days, 100 people joined the search, including the search and rescue crews from Coos, Curry, Josephine, Jackson and Klamath counties. Fire departments from Coquille, Myrtle Point, Bridge, Fairview and Green Acres also joined the search. Clara was found around 5:40 p.m. Sunday evening on a piece of her neighbor's property. She had apparently fallen down a slope and was unable to get up. She was taken to Coquille Valley Hospital, where she was treated for hypothermia. "This whole experience was the hardest cycling of emotions I've ever had in my life by a factor of 10," Chipp Boggs said. "I just can't describe it." |
