PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say a man waiting for a MAX train Thursday night was stabbed several times near the Rose Quarter MAX platform.
Portland Police say the 49-year-old man was taken to Emanuel Hospital. His injuries are described as non life-threatening.
The crime occurred shortly before 10 p.m.
Police found and detained a 40-year-old man, identified as Michael Cole.

Detectives are just beginning the investigation but early witness statements suggest that the victim and suspect do not know each other and the victim was chosen at random.

Police say the victim was stabbed in the legs, back and abdomen. An off-duty medic helped to stop the bleeding. Police say that had the medic not intervened, the victim most likely would have died.
Several witnesses remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Police say the suspect and victim had no altercation or contact leading up to the attack, and that such out-of-the-blue assaults without any kind of provocation are very rare.
