Police make 2nd arrest in cold case homicide

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A second man has been charged in the death of a Portland woman found fatally stabbed on a city sidewalk more than 13 years ago.

The Portland Police Bureau said Wednesday that 37-year-old Dana Rankins called detectives from St. Louis on April 13, about two weeks after his cousin, Shawntell Moses, had been arrested. A warrant was issued for Rankins following his interview with detectives and he waived extradition.

Both men are charged with murder in the death of 30-year-old Kala Peterson on Dec. 8, 1995.

The case had been classified as an unsolved, cold case until a tipster phoned Portland police to provide information that prompted the Moses arrest.
