Man, 22, drowns in fast, cold Sandy River

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Multnomah County authorities say a 22-year-old man drowned Sunday night in the Sandy River.

A sheriff's spokeswoman says Kirk Alexander Dunn was swimming with friends near the Troutdale Bridge when he was caught in a swift current.

Calls for help went out at 6:12 p.m., and Gresham firefighters pulled him from the water a half-hour later. Dunn was pronounced dead at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center.

Rescuers are warning swimmers that water in the Sandy and other local rivers is moving very fast this time of year and is so cold it can be debilitating to some swimmers.
