Softball players hurt when bus crashes into SUV stopped on I-5

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon State Police says two players on the Cascade High School girls softball team sustained injuries when the team bus struck a vehicle that had stopped on Interstate 5 south of Cottage Grove.

Lt. Gregg Hastings says the two players, both sophomores at the Turner-based school, and the driver of the stopped vehicle were taken to area hospitals Tuesday night. They were later treated and released.

Investigators think a medical problem may have caused 48-year-old David J. Vale of Milwaukie to stop his Lexus sport utility vehicle in the right-hand lane on the northbound side of the freeway about 7:40 p.m. Edward M. Craker, 74, of Salem, was driving the school bus about 55 mph when it collided with the SUV.

The players were returning from a game in Sutherlin when the crash happened. Their names were not released.
