Police fatally shoot man in Milwaukie
MILWAUKIE, Ore. - Police shot and killed a man at a Milwaukie apartment complex Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting happened at the Northridge Condominiums, located at 12600 S.E. Freeman Way.
According to police, around 4:30 p.m., two officers went to the complex on a welfare call and found a man bleeding and holding a knife. Police said when officers ordered the man to freeze, he didn't, causing them to open fire and kill him.
Residents like Susan Libbey were in their homes, just steps from the whole thing.
"They started shooting him and I heard three shots," she said.
What isn't clear is what the man did to threaten the officers. Police won't say. Libbey contends the man did nothing wrong.
"Those two policemen should not have shot him," she said. "There was nothing in his hands."
But investigators insist the officers, who felt they were in immediate danger, gave clear, repeated orders to drop the knife.
Authorities did not say why the man was bleeding when officers arrived, only that they did not believe anyone else caused his injuries.
Meanwhile, the two officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.
The man who was shot has not been identified but police did say he was a resident at the apartment complex.
