CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Lightning struck a tree and then destroyed a single-story house belonging to the family of an Oregon State University official.
Firefighters from four agencies converged on the home of James and Jorjie Coakley and two of their daughters on Thursday afternoon as intense weather rolled through the region. But they quickly ran out of water in their tanks.
The 41-year-old house is on a wooded site and far from a water source or hydrant.
The family's St. Bernard, Henry, managed to escape, but another dog, which had been outside, remained missing. The family said it hoped their pet was hiding and would emerge.
James Coakley is an associate dean for academic and student services at the university's College of Business.
