Group: we'll rename NW 23rd for Richard Nixon

PORTLAND, Ore. - How would you feel if one of Portland's trendiest streets was renamed Richard Nixon Avenue?

If the city votes to change 39th to Cesar Chavez Boulevard, which some folks think is pretty much a done deal, Wayne Stoll and some other clever east side business owners have a plan to rename Northwest 23rd after the infamous president.

"So once we get the ball rolling here, it seems like any numbered street is up for grabs," said Stoll.

Of course, the idea is a little tongue in cheek.

"It's just kind of proving the point - where do we stop?" said Stoll.

As absurd as the idea sounds, it would only take 2,500 Portlanders to agree and with how annoyed people are with this whole name change hoopla, that might not be hard to get. A panel of historians and planning commissioners must also sign off on the name and the City Council would have to vote on it.

But you get the point these folks are trying to make.  They don't think anything should be renamed, particularly by people who don't live or work on that street.
