Dogs die after saving owners from fire

By KATU Web Staff

HAZEL DELL, Wash. - Two dogs who helped their owners escape a house fire early Sunday perished as a result of the blaze.

The fire occurred at a home at 6105 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave. The house had no working smoke detectors, and the residents' two dogs awoke them and helped both get out alive.

One of the residents was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Sunday. Fire officials did not release his name.

Both dogs were evacuated from the house and put on oxygen. But both dogs died before firefighters could save them.
