SEATTLE -- A Seattle Sounder is at the center of the largest sexual assault lawsuit in the history of Major League Soccer.

A University of Oregon student claims forward Jonathan "Nate" Jaqua raped her while walking her home in Eugene, Ore. on July 1, 2007, according to a complaint filed in Multnomah County this week.

The alleged victim, who was on the school's soccer team, said she met Jaqua several hours earlier at a gathering she had attended with her teammates at a bar called Rennie's Landing in Eugene.

She said she found Jaqua to be "credible and trustworthy" because he "held himself out as a representative player of Major League Soccer," the complaint said. Jaqua, 27, was employed by the Los Angeles Galaxy or Houston Dynamo at the time.

The woman said when she left Rennie's Landing around midnight and began walking home alone, Jaqua approached her and asked if he could walk with her for several blocks. She allowed him to accompany her, she said.

While passing the cemetery, Jaqua attacked the woman "subjected her to a brutal, forcible sexual assault," the complaint said. The woman said Jaqua raped her, then relieved himself on her afterward.

The woman said she suffered physical and mental pain, as well as emotional distress as a result of the alleged attack. She added she grew fearful of men, as well as being alone or leaving the house. The woman could no longer continue attending college or playing soccer, according to the complaint.

The woman is seeking $10 million in damages.

MLS officials said they first heard of the allegations on Thursday afternoon.

"Every organization, whether it's a fortune 500 company or a professional sports league, needs to take allegations like this seriously," said Dan Courtemanche, senior vice president of marketing and communication of MLS.

Courtemanche said the league does not have a blanket policy on sexual assault, which is dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

"It's something that we're going to work closely with the team (on), and the team is going to work closely with Mr. Jaqua's attorneys regarding allegations and certainly let the legal process take its course," said Courtemanche.

The Seattle Sounders have not commented.

Originally from Eugene, Jaqua was drafted to the Sounders in November, 2008 from the Houston Dynamo. Throughout his career, he has played for the Los Angeles Galaxy, the Chicago Fire and Rheindorf Altach in Austria.
