Teen comes to rescue twice in 1 day
Chloe Dauwalder says she's not a hero for coming to the rescue of two people in one day. "It's all in a day's work," she says. By Shomari Stone
MERCER ISLAND, Wash. - A thrift store worker came to the rescue - not once, but twice - in the same day.
Now, she's being called a hero. But Chloe Dauwalder, 19, says she just did what anyone would do under the same circumstances. Her first surprise that day came as she was emptying donated clothes from a bin at the Mercer Island Thrift Shop. "There was a pair of jeans, and I was looking at them to see if we wanted them in the store, and I unfolded it and it was rolled up in the jeans," Chloe says. What she found was $9,000 in savings bonds. "That's probably one that goes down in the history book," she chuckles. "Guess what I found one time? Nine thousand dollars." Although she had mounting student loans and is paying her way through college, she did the right thing - called the owner and returned it. "He was really grateful. Thanked me numerous times. It was good to see how happy he was," she says. She felt good, continued to work, sorting clothes. Little did she know her heroism was just beginning. Just about an hour later, she saw something alarming - a woman was having a seizure inside one of the thrift shop's dressing rooms. "I just saw some feet fall from that curtain. I opened it up," Chloe explains. "I helped her out. I got her on the floor, laid her on the side. 'Cause I had first responder training when I was in high school." An off-duty nurse heard Chloe yelling for help and she called 911. Paramedics arrived soon afterward. Now Chloe's the talk of Mercer Island. Her boss, Logan Ens, says it is "great" to have such an honest employee. "It's hard to find people who are good at their job and reliable," he says. Reliable, honest - but Chloe says, please don't call her a hero. "It's all in a days work I guess," she says. "I mean, I don't see myself as that. ... I'm sure a lot of people would do the same thing." |
