PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon Humane Society is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest after someone stabbed and skinned a couple's Boston terrier in Milwaukie over the weekend.

The janitor at Rex Putnam High School found the 5-year-old dog, named Bandit, on school grounds Monday morning. The Humane Society said the dog died from stab wounds to the neck. After it was killed, its coat was cut from its body.

The dog belonged to Barbara and Willard Marr, who live on Southeast Gordon Street within 1,500 feet of the school. They told investigators they let Bandit out in their backyard at 10 p.m. Sunday before they went to bed and became concerned when they checked on it about 10:20 p.m. and the dog had disappeared, the Humane Society said. The couple looked for the dog for hours but couldn't find it.

The couple has open spaces in their backyard, and Bandit occasionally got out in the past.

"(The perpetrator has) gotta be sick," Willard Marr told KATU. "The wife is real sick from it too so."

Humane Society investigator Austin Wallace said it takes a very violent person to mutilate a dog in such fashion. Officials are particularly concerned because crimes against animals often precede violence against people.

Anyone with information on the case can call the OHS animal cruelty hotline at (503) 285-7722, ext: 214.
