PORTLAND, Ore. - People and pets can beat the heat by coming to the Oregon Humane Society. OHS is now offering its lobby as a cooling center for individuals and their animals who are suffering from Portland's record-breaking heat wave.

The OHS cooling center will be open today through Sunday, Aug 2, during normal shelter hours: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Pets must be accompanied by their owners at all times. Pet drop offs are not allowed.

As noted in the KATU.com forums, "there are few, if any, cooling centers where people can bring their pets," said OHS Executive Director Sharon Harmon. Those that do allow pets are included in KATU.com's list of Portland-area cooling stations.

Adults, children and well-behaved pets are invited to the Human Society's cooling center at 1067 N.E. Columbia Blvd. The center is in the Animal Medical Learning Center just east of the Oregon Humane Society's main shelter entrance. The public is encouraged to bring crates for animals accustomed to using them.

Call (503) 285-7722 or visit www.OregonHumane.org for further details. OHS is a nonprofit organization and receives no tax dollars to support its adoption, education and law enforcement programs.
