Fatal crash closes Highway 18 for over 4 hours

ROSE LODGE, Ore. – Oregon State Police are investigating a crash on Wednesday that killed a Salem man and left his wife injured after their car turned directly in front of a truck on Highway 18, closing it for 4.5 hours.

Police said the Ford Mustang, driven by Shannon Iverson, 41, of Salem was going westbound on Highway 18 east of Highway 101 at around 1 p.m. The car was making a left turn onto North Bear Creek Road when it turned directly in front of an eastbound flatbed truck pulling a small trailer.

The passenger, Dwight Iverson, 53, was in the front seat and pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck driver, 51-year-old Jeffrey Allen Smith, received minor injuries but was not transported for treatment.

Shannon Iverson was initially transported to North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City before being transferred to Legacy Emanuel Hospital and is expected to be okay.
