Cyclist killed in freak accident on Hwy 101

This is a press release courtesy of the Lincoln City Police Department.

On Sunday, September 20, 2009 at about 6:03pm, Lincoln City Police and North Lincoln Fire & Rescue personnel responded to a report of a bicyclist that had been struck by a vehicle on US Highway 101 near Northeast 10th Street.

It was further reported that the bicyclist was not conscious and not breathing. When officers arrived on scene they found the female bicyclist laying in the inside south bound lane of the highway with apparent severe head trauma. Two bystanders had started performing CPR, which was continued by Lincoln City Police and North Lincoln Fire & Rescue personnel.

Despite the extensive rescue efforts given, the bicyclist, identified as 26-year-old Kit Yang Charlene Pun of Calgary Alberta Canada was pronounced dead at the scene.

The subsequent crash scene investigation indicates that Ms. Pun was on her bicycle in the center turn lane of the highway with another bicyclist when she unexpectedly fell over into the inside south bound lane of travel, directly in front of a car traveling south and was immediately struck by that vehicle.

The driver of the involved vehicle was identified as 86-year-old Doral E. Bray of Otis, Ore. Ms. Bray did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision and stayed on scene and was fully cooperative throughout the investigation.

Ms. Pun was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the incident. She was traveling by bicycle through the state with friends. Neither of the two friends she was traveling with were struck or injured.

US Highway 101 was closed for approximately three hours with both northbound and southbound traffic being diverted to side streets around the crash scene while the crash investigation was being conducted. There are no indications that speed or alcohol was a factor in the crash. No citations were issued.

Members of North Lincoln Fire & Rescue, Pacific West Ambulance, Newport Police Department, Oregon Department of Transportation and the Lincoln County District Attorneys Office assisted the Lincoln City Police at the scene.
