CLATSOP CONTY, Ore. – Plans to build a liquid natural gas facility on the banks of the Columbia River near Astoria took another step forward Wednesday.

Clatsop County commissioners voted 4-1 in favor of a terminal at what is called the Bradwood Landing Project site.

The location is about 20 miles east of Astoria on the Columbia.

Backers of the terminal, which includes gas companies who would move fuel through the site, claim the location would be environmentally safe and would create jobs.

Critics claim the planned facility would be detrimental to the local environment and could attract terrorist’s attention.

More votes, approval processes, permits and studies need to be completed before construction can begin.
