Interesting reasons for driving with illegal substances

Police car lights at night

JEFFERSON, Ore. - Saturday was an interesting day for two sheriff's deputies in rural Jefferson, about halfway between Eugene and Portland.

They arrested a woman who said she somehow forgot she had someone else's coat, someone else's pot and someone else's pipe. But the meth was hers.

At 10:15 p.m. Deputy Matt Hagan and Reserve Deputy Andrew Derschon said they stopped a 1989 Toyota Celica on a tip that the driver had a suspended license.

The driver, 40-year-old Latisha Epps of Jefferson, was heading down Sixth Street in Jefferson. Once stopped, the deputies said she admitted not having a license. Here's the rest of the story, from a Marion Co. Sheriff's Office press release sent to KATU:

Epps "indicated she was driving because she was 'just being dumb I guess.'  Evangelina Chavez, 48, of Jefferson was a passenger in the vehicle and was found to be in possession of a glass pipe, and small plastic tube both with faint traces of a white substance believed to be methamphetamine.

As Deputy Hagan and Derschon continued their investigation they found another glass pipe with white residue inside a bag that Epps admitted was hers. However, she indicated the pipe was not hers and said 'Oh I forgot about that, but it's not mine, its evidence.'  She said the pipe belonged to someone else.

Both Epps and Chavez were arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

When taking Epps into custody, Deputy Hagan located another small baggie with residue believed to be methamphetamine in the pocket of the sweatshirt she was wearing.  Epps immediately said 'oh s***, this isn't my coat I just borrowed it from my friend.'  She was unwilling to provide the name of the friend.

The deputies said they also found two baggies of marijuana in the glove box of the vehicle that Epps said she was delivering for a friend. She said 'I was delivering it for a friend that has a medical marijuana card to this old guy that uses it.'  Epps would not say who she was delivering it for or to whom she was delivering it to.

She was also charged with delivery of a controlled substance-marijuana and a misdemeanor driving while suspended.

Both Epps and Chavez were transported to the Marion County Jail."
