IKEA's sign may land them in some hot water

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Oregon's first IKEA store hasn't opened but it is already the focus on attention in Portland.

A city commissioner has put a ban on issuing any sign permits for the development near the airport where the IKEA is going in because of the store's massive sign.

The sign is 100 feet tall and eclipses all regulations for the area and although a special committee approved it, City Commissioner Randy Leonard says he is upset.

He says the store should not be allowed a different set of rules because it is a large corporation. He concedes that developers are upset with his freeze on all new signs but those will stay in place until he gets answers to his questions.

He says he doubts the IKEA sign will come down but he wants to prevent any more like it.
