State launches investigation following audit of City of Washougal's money
WASHOUGAL, Wash. - A state audit of the city of Washougal revealed some questionable items when it comes to the city's money.
At issue are two city festivals. Investigators found during the 2008 Washougalfest that the city failed to collect $43,000 in revenue from tickets, sponsorships, auctions and more. During the 2009 Riverfest, the money totaled about $53,000.
In addition, $63,000 in questionable payments were made to the non-profit organizing the events. The city is ending its contract with that non-profit but state officials believe the city should try to collect the money it is owed.
The state also audited city credit cards, including the mayor's, and found thousands of dollars in questionable expenses.
In light of what was discovered by the audit, the state is launching a special investigation.
