PORTLAND, Ore. - A Rottweiler died after getting shot in an incident that the dog's owner says was unjustified.
Dozier died at DoveLewis after suffering what was described as massive trauma in the chest, which led to massive bleeding. The dog was in severe shock.
"We tried to bring him back by actually making an incision into his chest and breathing for him," said Alicia Faggella, Critical Care Director for DoveLewis.
However, the attempt was not enough and Dozer died.
"I have 10 grandkids and they're going to miss him so much too," Don Reed, Dozer's owner, said while he grieved over the dog's body, which DoveLewis workers brought in covered in a blanket so Reed and other family members could say goodbye. "He wouldn't hurt a flea. He shot my best friend."
According to Reed, Dozer was barking at a neighbor and the neighbor pulled out a pistol and shot the dog. "I just saw blood running down his chest and I said 'you shot my dog, didn't you?" Reed said. "I can't believe it - just because he was barking at him."
Reed, who has been living at his brother's house in Scappoose, said he does not know the neighbor's name just yet.
A DoveLewis spokesperson said the hospital has filed a report with police and Reed said he plans to file a report as well.
As for the cost of Dozer's surgery, DoveLewis said it was covered by a fund set up to treat abused animals.
