LONGVIEW, Wash. – As the Fort Hood Army post was in lockdown Thursday after suspected shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire and killed 12 people and wounded 31, two local parents with family members on the base were panicked and wondered if their daughter and son-in-law were OK.

For an hour after the Muller family found out about the shooting in Texas they were on an emotional roller coaster ride.

As parents, Maureen and Kelly Muller said that they never thought in their wildest dreams that Fort Hood, the home of their daughter Nicole and her husband Sgt. Robert Becerra, would make headlines.

“That’s the safest place in the world,” said Maureen.

As soon as they heard about the shooting they picked up the phone but couldn’t get through.

“It is an absolutely panicky feeling,” Kelly said.

Finally an hour later a text message put them at ease.

“We’re fine. At home watching the news. All I’m hearing is what the news is saying,” the text message from Nicole said.

But it wasn’t until late Thursday night after finally talking to them on the phone that the Muller’s found out how close their loved ones were to the shooting.

“He could hear the gunshots from across the street, and they’re unloading their military vehicles,” said Kelly. “That’s different. That really brings home the panic again.”

“You just realize how close you were to losing your family,” Maureen said.

The Muller’s said as much as they’re rejoicing that their family members are OK, others are suffering from the loss of their own loved ones. They said their hearts are with those who lost family members and they grieve for them too.
