PORTLAND, Ore. – On stories on Thursday’s shooting at Fort Hood KATU.com lit up with comments that linked the actions of suspected shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan to all Muslims. Others questioned why the religion of a suspect is only brought up when they belong to a minority faith.

“Islam condemns something like this under any circumstances,” said Evan Wicks about Thursday’s shooting.

Wicks and Richard Reno converted to Islam from Christianity.

“I was attracted to its teaching and inclusiveness,” said Reno.

But Americans sometimes struggle with tolerance toward them and immediately hone in on Hasan’s religion and prompt comments on KATU.com like, “Get rid of the Muslims! It’s an awful, dangerous so-called religion.”

Some called it a “cult” that teaches “hate and intolerance”.

“I understand their anger, but they’re angry at something they don’t understand,” said Wicks. “Not all Muslims believe the same and my interpretation of Islam is under no circumstances, under no pretenses, is violence against innocence allowed. Period.”

“It seems like there’s a lot of anger in the world right now and we want to blame,” said David Leslie with Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. He said it’s dangerous to condemn all based on the actions of one. Think about Timothy McVeigh, he said. He was Catholic but that was never mentioned.

“Does that mean then that McVeigh, because he blew up the Murrow building, does that make him and all Catholics terrorists? No.” Leslie said.

Yet, he said, Muslims are again put in the position to defend their faith.

“Whether or not motive had anything to do with religious beliefs whatsoever, people tend to jump to that conclusion because of the way the world climate is these days,” he said.

Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon said it’s dangerous to immediately assume religion is the motive when it could be other issues like mental illness.

All area-mosques have been told to increase security in light of threats.
