CANBY, Ore. - His job is to catch the bad guys and protect fellow officers, but a K-9 cop with the Canby Police Department is now fighting for his own life.

Jalk (pronounced 'yawk') has been officer Chris Mead's K-9 partner since 2004 and the two have created a lasting bond.

"There have been times that he's actually saved my life," Mead said.

Now it is Mead's turn to save Jalk's life.

Last week, the 5-year-old German Shepherd was diagnosed with cancer.  A malignant tumor was found near his thyroid gland.

"He's usually real bouncy and happy to see people," said Mead.  "Now he basically wants to lay down."

There is so much swelling in Jalk's neck that he has a tough time eating.

"If we're able to remove it surgically, the next step is to go in and surgically remove the mass," said Kim Freeman, DVM.

This week, Mead will meet with the veterinarian to see if the swelling in Jalk's neck has subsided enough for an MRI.

All medical costs will be paid for out of the Canby Police Department's K-9 fund.
