Steam plume rises above Mount St. Helens
PORTLAND, Ore. - Just before twilight Thursday night, a large steam plume was visible above Mount St. Helens.
KATU News focused our cameras in on the mountain around 8:20 p.m. when someone called the station saying they thought something might be happening on Mount St. Helens.
According to Willie Scott with the U.S. Geological Survey, the mountain had been steaming all day, but the plume only became visible once the low cloud cover lifted. He said the atmospheric conditions are just right for this kind of activity on Mount St. Helens.
Yes, I did see it; we have a great view from my home. Although it was twilight when I returned home, I was able to see her exhaling. We see it happen frequently and just say that the 'grand lady is breathing.' - Karylinn
I was heading home from Portland and noticed the cloud just above the volcano...it certainly caught my eye but the cloud wasn't anything like the March 8, 2005 event. It will be interesting to see if the cloud was due to atmospheric conditions or an actual event on the volcano. - Frank - Battle Ground, Washington
