GRESHAM, Ore. – An investigation is under way in Gresham after a man was struck and killed by a MAX light rail train Sunday evening.
Police said the man was apparently crossing the tracks to get to another train when he was hit.
Witnesses said the train operator sounded the train’s horn more than once and activated emergency stop procedures but the pedestrian was still hit.
The incident took place at a station located at the Eastern Parkway and Division Street in Gresham at about 8 p.m. It was dark at the time but the station is lit by streetlamps.
The victim was not identified. Witnesses said the pedestrian was wearing a pink hooded sweatshirt and initial reports indicated a female had been hit but police confirmed the victim as a male.
The MAX station was the site of another fatal collision in 2003 when a teen on a bicycle was hit and killed when he rode out in front of a train.
