HILLSBORO, Ore. - Two days after a fatal shooting spree that started at a Hillsboro intersection, the family of the shooter is speaking out. The shooter, 28-year-old Shawn Schumacher of Hillsboro, died after a high-speed chase and shootout with police that ended Saturday afternoon in Cornelius.

He was airlifted by LifeFlight to Portland's Oregon Health & Science University hospital, and died a short time later. LeGore would have turned 56 in December.

Dale and Jan Schumacher released this statement Monday afternoon:

"This past weekend, our son Shawn committed a random act of extreme violence that took the life of another man, Danny LeGore. As we grieve the death of our son and Mr. LeGore, we ask the question of why?

We have learned that Shawn was experimenting with the drug peyote and committed this act while under the influence of this powerful drug. Uncharacteristic of who he really was, Shawn has caused great pain for the family of Danny LeGore, the communities of Hillsboro, Cornelius, and for our family.

We are deeply saddened by this act of violence, and want to express our sincere sorrow for the tragic death of Mr. LeGore and to the people and communities impacted by this terrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was involved."
