PORTLAND, Ore. -- Union Gospel Mission served up Thanksgiving meals until 2 p.m. today - an annual tradition known as "Love Your Neighbor Day." More than 200 volunteers dished up turkey, stuffing, yams, mashed potatoes, vegetables and pie.

Union Gospel Mission has closed off Northwest Third Avenue, between West Burnside and Couch streets. Workers also have set up a 120-foot tent - donated for use by Northwest Natural Gas - to provide shelter from Portland's Thanksgiving rain.

Volunteers began serving at 10 a.m. Thursday. Organizers expect to serve as many as 2,000 meals.

This is the first major meal prepared in Union Gospel Mission's new kitchen, which opened at 15 N.W. Third Ave. on Saturday. The event also features live music from local musicians.
